Note that in the images below Griz’s left (our right!) is now blueish to match the cool tones on that side of the background.įinally we add a bit of rim light, which involves a lot of complicated messing around with mask textures which I won’t get into here, but looks very cool: Next, we light the character sprites to match the scenes, much as you would on a film or stage set. First off we give a general colour treatment to whole scene, using global light settings, post processing effects and some fog particles to tie it together Unity has some excellent tools for lighting 2D sprites, and we’re making extensive use of them. ![]() This is largely achieved through lighting. Those facial expressions, meanwhile, are constructed from a much larger range of eye, brow and mouth assets, all carefully blended onto a single head model, which in turn tilts a bit to sell various attitudes.įinally, let’s look at how we get Griz to blend nicely with a scene background. So for example, the hands-on-hips pose can convey both surprise and aggression, depending on which head you attach: So what we’ve settled on - for the moment - is a small set of full-body poses that can convey several attitudes each, supported by a larger array of facial expressions. #Kickstarter mask of the rose full#At first we experimented with a static torso and a range of arm positions, but the results were stiff and unconvincing - people don’t move their arms in isolation, after all.įull body movement is better at conveying emotion, but we couldn’t commit to drawing anything up to a dozen full body poses for each character, and it would potentially have looked strange anyway large pose and expression changes in quick succession can come across less as “acting” and more as an interpretative dance. #Kickstarter mask of the rose how to#The first problem was how to change poses. I’m going to use Griz to illustrate some of our approaches to these problems - she was the first character I designed and has served as a test subject for most of our experiments. All of these things are, of course, much easier and faster to achieve with line drawings and flat colour, but we were determined to make the rendered route work. And, because you never really know how they will function until you get them into a scene, they have to be straightforwardly adjustable. They have to make visual sense against multiple backgrounds. Visual novel characters have to be expressive and malleable, which means multiple poses and expressions. This decision has created some interesting challenges. ![]() Honestly, it’s just a style that I really enjoy drawing, and If you’re going to spend a year or more making something, you might as well have a good time. We were aiming for a visual style that felt like an evolution of Fallen London, which usually favours a combination of painterly rendering and mild exaggeration for its characters:įallen London characters: mild exaggeration We wanted to distinguish the look of the game from other visual novels, which tend towards line drawing and flat shading. #Kickstarter mask of the rose mac#We’re offering keys for PC, Mac and Linux in the Kickstarter, but Mask of the Rose will be coming to consoles as well.We decided pretty early in Mask of the Rose pre-production that we wanted the characters to appear solid and painterly. We’re hoping to bring you another deep, dark and marvellous delight with this latest project. You may not recall that Sunless Sea (and Sunless Skies) were also Kickstarter projects. In one playthrough of Mask of the Rose you might untangle a poisoner's motives uncover the fate of poor, drowned Parliament or help establish the new Feast of the Rose, a festival that will be celebrated in London for decades to come! But above all, Mask of the Rose is a story about love, in its many forms. It takes place in Victorian London, not long after the city was carried away by bats. Mask of the Rose is a romantic visual novel set in the same universe as our award-winning games Fallen London, Sunless Sea, and Sunless Skies. In November we announced our new game, Mask of the Rose, and we’ve just launched the Kickstarter! ![]()

LéBrecage’s disaster seemed like a prime opportunity to test out OnTrack’s drive recovery services with an actual messed-up hard drive from a Linux machine.Īt intake, Ontrack asked LéBrecage for specific information about the drive: What sort of data was on the drive? How many partitions does the drive have? What filesystem was used for each partition? Was the drive part of a RAID? What operating systems were installed? What data was most important? To date, Kroll OnTrack alone claims more than 1,000 successful recoveries of drives with Linux filesystems. The more damage there is to the drive or its data and structure, the harder and more expensive the recovery.įortunately for LéBrecage, over the last few years, several major drive recovery services have started supporting Linux filesystems. At that point, he stopped, which is exactly the right thing to do. “The MD5s wouldn’t sum,” LéBrecage explains. LéBrecage checked his backups, but they were corrupted. “The home recovery methods I knew didn’t work.” “Some kind of interaction between GParted and Partition Magic 8 obliterated most of the superblocks,” says LéBrecage. LéBrecage was repartitioning his hard drive so he’d have room to compile. LéBrecage’s loss gave him the opportunity to test the drive recovery service from Kroll OnTrack. That’s exactly what happened to a developer of our acquaintance we’ll call John LéBrecage. Data loss happens in a number of ways - such as while trying to compile under the influence of painkillers after minor surgery. ![]() ![]() Watch videos about what you’re learning in class.
